Former Hanceville City Council member and community leader Joann Walls died Friday night, leaving a legacy of public service to the area.
Walls served 16 years on the Hanceville City Council, and was known as an advocate for city employees’ wages and benefits. She also was a member of the local Civitan club that worked within the community, and had served as the organization’s district governor.
“She was always about building up Hanceville,” said Mayor Kenneth Nail. “I know the award she was most humbled by was the Lucille Galin Public Service Award, and she was certainly deserving for all she did for our community and area.”
Walls had surgery for a health issue earlier in the week, Nail said.
“I went to the hospital to talk to her, and she said she had had a talk with the Lord, and that she was good and was going to go to sleep,” Nail said. “She will be missed in our city and the area, but she will also be remembered for her work and her care.”
Flags in Hanceville have been lowered and will remain so for three days in honor of Walls’ life and service to the community, said Nail.
A spokesman for Hanceville Funeral Home said arrangements for Walls’ funeral are expected to be announced early in the week.
