JOHNSON’S CROSSING — Authorities are investigating the circumstances that caused a house fire that killed an 80-year-old woman overnight.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick identified the victim as Odell Bice. Johnson’s Crossing Fire Chief Mark Reeves told WVTM-TV that three people including a child already had escaped the burning home when crews arrived.
Firefighters pulled two other people from the house. One was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, the other — Bice — was pronounced dead at the scene
The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating.
Investigators don’t suspect foul play and believe an accidental fire, possibly electrical, may have been the cause, State Fire Marshall Scott Pilgreen said.
Odell’s death brings the number of those killed in Cullman County fires this year to three, with 43 total statewide, according to the state fire marshal’s office.
Johnson’s Crossings firefighters were first dispatched to a fully involved structure fire at 2:41 a.m., with two people inside the home, according to emergency dispatch reports.
Cullman and Berlin firefighters were also dispatched to assist.
According to online Cullman County property records, the home at 1461 County Road 706 was owned by Odell Leipert Alldredge.
