Headed to Birmingham this weekend? Lane closures planned for I-20/59 bridge work

If you’re planning to travel through Birmingham Friday or Saturday, be prepared for lane closures as work continues on the massive I-59/20 bridge project downtown.

Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation plans to implement the following closures:

A single left lane closure on I-59/20 northbound from Center Street to the interchange beginning 8 p.m. Friday and ending 1 p.m. Saturday.

A single left lane closure at the on-ramp from I-65 northbound to I-59/20 southbound beginning 8 p.m. Friday and ending 8 a.m. Saturday.

A single left lane closure on I-59/20 southbound through the interchange from 8-11 p.m. Friday. This single left lane closure will transition into a double left lane closure at the same location from 11 p.m. Friday through 8 a.m. Saturday.

A single right lane closure on I-59/20 southbound through the interchange from 8-11 p.m. Saturday. This single right lane closure will transition into a double right lane closure at the same location from 11 p.m. Saturday through 8 a.m. Sunday.

All temporary traffic control signage and warnings will be in place.

The foundation work is a part of Phase II of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interchange and Bridge Replacement Project.

Motorists are urged to use alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
