U.S. Open: Trey Mullinax shoots 8-under, exempted into 2018 championship

- Former Gardendale and University of Alabama golfer Trey Mullinax finished tied for ninth place at the U.S. Open in Erin, Wisconsin.
He birdied his final three holes on Sunday in Erin, Wisconsin.
In his first major championship, Gardendale High School alumnus Trey Mullinax finished tied for ninth place with an 8-under 280 at the U.S. Open. His 4-under 68 in the final round also qualified him for the 2018 championship, which will be played at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, N.Y.
Mullinax, a 2010 graduate form Gardendale and vital member of the University of Alabama’s run of consecutive Division I national championships in 2013 and ’14, opened the tournament with a score of 71. He went on to shoot a 72 in Round 2, a 69 in Round 3 and a 68 in Round 4 for a total of 280 strokes.

Mullinax, 24, earned All-American status as a senior in Tuscaloosa. After turning professional in 2014, he charged to his first win in the 2016 Rex Hospital Open—an outing that banked him a PGA Tour card.
