2017 ALL-STATE BASEBALL TEAM: Cullman’s Heatherly named Class 6A Pitcher of the Year; 3 others earn 1st-team honors

Published 11:00 pm Saturday, June 10, 2017

Cullman’s Jacob Heatherly has long been one of the best pitchers in the state — regardless of classification.

On Saturday night, though, the Alabama Sports Writers Association confirmed the left-handed flamethrower was the best Class 6A had to offer at his position this past season.

Heatherly picked up the coveted Pitcher of the Year prize and spearheaded a wonderful quartet of first-teamers when the ASWA released its annual All-State Baseball Teams. Joining the Alabama signee was Cullman’s Owen Lovell (outfielder), Cullman’s Noah Fondren (third baseman) and Fairview’s Preston Moore (5A shortstop).

Cullman’s Will Morrison (second-team pitcher) and Levi Thomas (honorable mention pitcher) rounded out the local flavor.

Heatherly saved perhaps his best for last during the Black and Gold’s run to Montgomery.

The senior earned 116 strikeouts (second in 6A) and allowed only 24 hits in 69 2/3 innings. His 1.11 ERA and 0.90 WHIP were some of the best in his classification as well. In 14 games, Heatherly claimed a 10-1 record with three shutouts and one no-hitter — a 13-strikeout performance against 6A state champion Helena.

But those stats weren’t even the best part.

According to Cullman coach Brent Patterson, Heatherly’s transformation from a potentially dominant ace into an actually dominant ace couldn’t have been more fulfilling to watch transpire over the past three years.

“He really grew up right before our eyes,” Patterson said. “He took hold of that No. 1 spot and really anchored us moving forward. He’s a left-handed guy with electric stuff. You don’t get a lot of those. You can coach a lifetime and don’t get one. Jacob became the pitcher we thought he could be. Tremendous talent and tremendous teammate. When he reached his peak, the strikeouts went through the roof.”

Lovell once again demonstrated his transcendent abilities on the diamond for the Bearcats.

The Mississippi State signee garnered a .427 batting average with a .531 on-base percentage, .733 slugging percentage and 1.264 OPS in 131 at-bats. He netted 56 hits, 44 RBIs, 40 runs, 22 stolen bases, 17 doubles and seven homers in 45 games en route to helping the Black and Gold to a 38-9 record. He also sported a .983 fielding percentage.

His first-team distinction was his fourth straight All-State accolade and comes just one year after taking home both Class 6A Player of the Year and Mr. Baseball honors.

“He’s so consistent,” Patterson said of his departing senior. “He’s a .400 hitter who leads our program in all-time hits and home runs. Not only that, but he’s a rock in center field. Owen is a once-in-a-lifetime player. You think he might have two bad weeks, but he’d actually still be pretty great. He hit for power and average, he drove guys in, he stole bases. But the thing about Owen, he always had a humility about him. He never let the success — and there was a lot — get to him.”

Fondren, who’s bound for Alabama, was every bit as important to Cullman’s journey as Lovell.

The senior leadoff man scored a .415 batting average and .497 on-base percentage to go along with a team-high 59 hits, 44 runs, 24 RBIs, 13 stolen bases, 11 doubles, two triples and two homers.

Fondren’s leadership, however, came to light the most for Patterson.

“He brought so much to the table,” he said. “He grew into himself and became really comfortable with who he was. Noah does things the right way. Always had the program’s interests in mind. He was good from start to finish. He also come up with a lot of plays at third base that people take for granted. He’s a just a leader, man. We’re going to miss him.”

Fairview’s Moore made huge strides in putting his name on the map as one of the state’s rising juniors.

The Samford commit finished second in 5A in total hits (50), third in on-base percentage (.560), fourth in batting average (.476) and sixth in home runs (six).

He contributed 47 runs, 39 RBIs, 16 doubles, 12 stolen bases and six triples for the Aggies, who reached the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Coach Brandon Tidmore watched a star in the making.

“What stood out me was Preston’s work ethic,” he said. “His attitude and mindset … he was never too high and never too low. He didn’t get riled up when things were bad, and he didn’t get caught up in the moment when things were good. He’s one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever been around. There’s a whole lot of time spent when people aren’t watching for him to be as good as he is. He was a solid presence all year long, and he delivered more often than not. The coaches, as well as the players, have a lot of confidence in him.”
