With spring practices wrapping up this month, the nine local teams in our coverage area will head into their respective summers with a fairly good idea of where they stand — both physically and mentally — ahead of the 2017 campaign.

Today, we’ll take a deeper look at Cold Springs, Holly Pond and Vinemont.

See Thursday’s edition for capsules on Addison, Good Hope and Hanceville.

See Friday’s edition for capsules on Cullman, Fairview and West Point.

Cold Springs

% Last Year’s Record: 5-6 (4-2 in Class 2A, Region 7)

% Key Losses: Cayde Elliott, Fisher Willoughby, Trevor Slayton, River Banks, Wyatt Swann, Nic Rollo

% Key Returners: Kevin Brakefield, Austin Lively, Seth Edgeworth, Jon Campbell, Payton Parsons, Brian McAnnally

% Jamboree: Intrasquad Scrimmage

% Coach Speak: “Spring went well. There are two different thoughts to this team. We don’t have any experience in the skill positions. On the other hand, all the guys up front are returning. I don’t know which of those will win over yet. The potential is there for our young players, but they kind of have to get their scars out there in the game. You’ve got to see how they react in those situations. We were really pleased with how they responded in the spring, though. I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Now, we’ll just have to wait and see.” — Rod Elliott

Holly Pond

% Last Year’s Record: 6-5 (3-3 in Class 3A, Region 6)

% Key Losses: Michael Lambert, Dylan Morton, Caleb Jones, Zac Naler, Jacob Wilson, Jason Foshee, Romey Suryono, Mason May, Matt Cahoon

% Key Returners: Kyler Chaney, Riley Gillilan, Isaac Schwaiger, Luis Garcia, Tyler Boatright, Alex Corneglio

% Jamboree: Intrasquad Scrimmage

% Coach Speak: “This group’s real aggressive. There’s something about them I really like. We won’t have great size, but I like their chemistry. I thought the coaches did a really good job of implementing our offense and defense this spring. We had things to learn. We’re not the same team as we have been, so we needed to make changes. I think the kids took to it.” — Mike Bates

Vinemont

% Last Year’s Record: 2-8 (0-6 in Class 3A, Region 6)

% Key Losses: Garrett Boland, Deke Wright, Colby Nicholas, Jaythan Blanton, Cody Stewart, Lane Smith

% Key Returners: Oistin Cornelius, Gage Bailey, Derrick Ransom,

% Jamboree: West Point 49, Vinemont 8

% Coach Speak: “The kids are working hard. That’s been our thing. They’ve put in the work this spring.” — Assistant coach Steven Robinson
