A late-night thunderstorm left 10,000 people without power and damaged several homes and poultry houses.
With winds sometimes reaching more than 60 miles per hour, several large trees were toppled, knocking out power lines and leaving the heaviest trail of destruction in Vinemont and Gold Ridge, Phyllis Little, Cullman County Emergency Management Agency director, said.
“We activated in our office around 9:30 at night and stayed busy up until about 4 a.m.,” Little said. “I know that the National Weather Service was closely monitoring around the Vinemont area because of upper rotation at one time.”
The damage, however, remains attributed to a strong thunderstorm that swept through much of Cullman County, with its heaviest impact in Vinemont and the Gold Ridge community. Winds also snapped electrical power poles and damaged trees in Terri Pines.
Little said two homes at least were damaged by trees toppling over in the City of Cullman. A mobile home in Vinemont was also damaged by a tree.
“The good news is we came through it with no serious injuries. We’ve given tarps to several fire departments who were assisting people,” Little said.
The possibility of thunderstorms exists every day this week, including during Rock the South, which is scheduled Friday and Saturday.
“We’re especially keeping an eye on the weather because of Rock the South, she said. “So many people will be outdoors and afternoon thunderstorms are common this time of year.”
Little said power had been restored for most customers, although a few repairs were still ongoing Monday morning.
