HANCEVILLE — After decades of operating out of the City of Cullman, the Red Cross of Cullman County is set to make Hanceville its new home.

The move comes following the approval of a one-year lease agreement that secures the agency two rooms inside the Hanceville Civic Center.

The Hanceville City Council unanimously approved a $400 per-month lease agreement with the agency at Thursday’s regular council meeting.

Mayor Kenneth Nail said the move will not affect other activity at the civic center, and that the Red Cross would be bound by the same approval process as any other entity, should it need to use more floor space at the civic center to stage blood drives or other events.

Having the Red Cross at the civic center also affords the city convenient access to the organization’s local command hierarchy in the event of an emergency, said Nail.

“It’s a great organization. They were great for all of us down here during our storm disaster in 2011, and if we ever were to face another disaster scenario, they would already be right here at the civic center, which is our main community shelter,” he said.

The lease period begins June 1.
