Named South Plaza, the development will eventually provide 16,650 square feet for food, services and some retail at 1st Avenue South and King Edward Street.

Samples Properties of Huntsville is handling the development on behalf of unnamed developers who have previously owned businesses in Cullman, said Wes Kendall of Samples Properties.

“The project is before the city now, but we’re also sending out packets to the people we would like to have locate in South Plaza,” Kendall said. “The first phase building includes drive-through space on one side for a business that will serve food. The other end has a patio area that would also suit a restaurant. In between, we are aiming more at service-type businesses, such as a cleaners or nails or even medical services.”

Kendall said many national retailers are slow to expand because of online sales affecting their businesses, but service businesses are more in demand.

“We may have some retail in one of the phases, but we are definitely looking at services and food,” Kendall said.

Kendall also said Cullman is a highly desirable for businesses and developers with its market reach and location between Huntsville and Birmingham along Interstate 65.

“There’s a lot more that wants to be in Cullman,” he said. “Cullman is kind of a gem with its location and what it offers. The location for South Plaza is not exactly on the main drag but it’s almost on Highway 31 in the business district. Our job is to find the right clients to lease the spaces.”

Kendall said groundbreaking could occur in 60 to 70 days, with the opening possibly by January.
