County school lunches going up 10 cents next year

Cullman County school lunches are going up next school year.
On Tuesday, the Cullman County Board of Education approved raising the cost of lunch accordingly: $2.25 to $2.35 for students, $3.25 to $3.35 for employees and $3.50 to $3.60 for visitors. The 10-cent per meal increase is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s paid lunch equity worksheet calculations.
Last month, the Cullman city school board increased lunch prices by 15 cents at East Elementary, West Elementary and Cullman City Primary School from $2.10 to $2.25 and at Cullman Middle School and Cullman High School from $2.35 to $2.50.

— Class of 2017 valedictorians and salutatorians: Cold Springs: Valedictorian Jesse Lee and Salutatorian Tucker Kilgo; Fairview: Valedictorian Taylor Dover and Salutatorian Allison Grand; Good Hope: Valedictorian Jacob Smith and Salutatorian Madison Lowery; Hanceville: Valedictorian Joshua Conway and Salutatorian Erin Wise; Holly Pond: Valedictorian Allie Smith and Salutatorian Bonnie-Heather Mann; Vinemont Valedictorian Landen Ballew and Salutatorian Alex Millwood and West Point Brantley Rodgers and Salutatorian Lucas Suits.

— Cold Springs High School: State Champion boys track team and FFCLA students competed in the state STAR events. Rachel Haynes won gold in career investigation and will compete in Nationals this summer. Matthew Blair, Reagan Lindsey & Stormy Schmidt won gold in illustrated talk category. Jessica Roden won silver in the life event planning category and Kylie Gann and Samantha Wilcutt won bronze in the focus on children category. Matthew Blair is the new 2017-18 FCCLA State Executive Council Vice President of Membership. Officers completed an interview process and meeting in Montgomery.

- Approved of Summer School Personnel: Hanceville High, Brent Barnet, administrative/teacher and Tyler Calvert, teacher. Pay up to $2,000 per semester for teachers and $3,000 for administrator, pending enrollment.
- Approved of the following requests from Fairview High School: Ramona Bryant, $20 per hour for color guard clinic and tryouts for a total of 15 hours, paid by Fairview High Band Boosters; George Redding, $2,500 for summer work and facility upkeep, paid by Fairview High Football Boosters; Cliff Bailey- $500 for serving as the 2016-2017 Assistant Track Coach, paid by Fairview High Track Boosters; Brandon Tal1ey $2,347 for running the recent AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball tournament, paid by Fairview High Basketball Boosters.
- Approved Cold Springs High School’s request to pay Rod Elliott $1,800 for field maintenance during the summer, paid by the local school booster club.
- Approved Cold Springs High School’s request to hire Jon Allcorn and Clay Rollo, both students, to help with the floors during the summer, paid minimum wage by local school funds (purchasing Child Labor Certificate).
- Approved Hanceville Elementary School offering a summer reading and math enrichment program on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.- noon on June 13-15, 20-22 and 27-29; July 4-6,11-13 and 18-20. Students in kindergarten through third. The cost is free and a snack is provided each day. Personnel includes Linsey Hudson, Keisha Malin, Monica Brown and Elizabeth Smith ($20 an hour), to be paid by local school funds.
- Approved high schools’ request for all high schools to offer credit advancement (per principal approval). Summer School/credit recovery fees will apply ($150 per credit/course for in-district and $200 per credit/course for out-of-district students) when taken during the summer or outside the normal school day.
- Approved Cold Springs’ request to name the library the Pam Bailey Library in honor of a former teacher/librarian.
- Approved March financial statements, bills ($5,352,531.15) and salaries ($8,078,700.26).
- Approved Maintenance Department’s public works projects: Hanceville Elementary— fence around playground, $10,808.33 by Parris Fence. West Point High —fencing for baseball and softball fields (storm damage), $3,650.00 by David Thomas Fencing; and West Point High force main sewer project, $19,310.00 by Frost Backhoe and Excavating.
- Approved request to proceed with the Good Hope Middle School capital paving project that did not receive any bids. Cullman County Schools Maintenance department will be the general contractor and the job will be managed by PH & J Architect firm.
- Approved request from the Child Nutrition Program to dispose of non-operational/obsolete capital equipment: Good Hope High Cafeteria — reach-in cooler; Hanceville cafeteria—reach-in cooler and Fairview cafeteria — walk-in freezer.
- Approved request from the Child Nutrition Program to hire student, Brayden Dugins, to help with maintenance during the summer, paid minimum wage by CNP funds (Purchasing Child Labor Certificate).
- Approved request to hire the following students to help with maintenance during the summer: Ethan Barnette, Caleb Barnette, Skylar Tucker, Hannah Dillashaw, Riley Kilpatrick, Connor Kilpatrick, Tanner Rusk and Jackson Dillashaw. They will be paid minimum wage by maintenance funds (Purchasing Child Labor Certificate).
- Approved request from Good Hope Boy Scout Troop 241 to use a Cullman County School Bus to transport Scout Troup 241 to summer camp in Delta, Alabama June 11-17. Helen Bowen, certified CCBOE bus driver will be driving, and Boy Scouts are responsible for all expenses.
- Approved request from Cullman County Extension Office to use a Cullman County School Bus to transport 4-H students to summer camp in Columbiana May 31- June 2. Misty Gaines, certified CCBOE bus driver will be driving, and Cullman Extension Office is responsible for all expenses.
- Approved revised board policy 7.7 regarding Virtual Academy, Online and Correspondence Courses.
- Approved request from the Director of Federal Programs to approve the Foster Care Plan-Alabama Education Stability for Foster Students.Approved pay select teachers a stipend for district approved summer work and/or training, as per salary schedule, to be paid by state, federal or general funds.
- Approved request from Director of Instruction to pay Assistant Principals a stipend of $15 per hour for two days training.- The training will be held outside of the their contract days during the month of June-paid by Federal Programs- this training is for implementation of the new teacher evaluation process, Educator Effectiveness.
- Approved to pay Becky Klein and Amita Smith $800 each, for May, June and July for temporary additional duties, to be paid by CNP funds.
- Approved paying the following for up to five unused Annual Leave days, as per board policy: Jeffery A. Curtis, James Brian Heaton, Rita N. Wood, Janet E. Mattox and Ferrell Runge.
- Approved request to add anatomy to the current fee schedule under Lab Science at $10 per semester.
- Approved 2018-2019 Cullman County Schools calendar.
- Approved of request to enter into an agreement with Fuel Education to provide curriculum services for Virtual Blended School Students. Amount based on student enrollment, and it will be funded through state foundation program.
- Approved request from Cullman County Education Support Professionals (CCESP) for three days professional leave for Lavonne Osborne to attend the 2017 ESP Leadership Conference in Mobile, Alabama on June 15-17 (Thursday-Friday). CCESP will pay days substitute salary: Becki Klein (no sub), Rena Watson (no sub), Ann Maddox (no sub), Taft Dillashaw (no sub) and Lavonne Osborne (sub paid by CCESP).
- Approved the following out-of-state field trips: (No general fund money will be used.) West Point High School’s archery team to compete in national tournament May 12-13 in Louisville, Kentucky; West Point High School’s AP U.S. history class trip to Atlanta, Georgia on May 20 for Broadway musical “Finding Neverland;” West Point High School’s baseball team to Starkville, Mississippi for team camp and play dates June 5 and Career Center’s FCCLA will go to Nashville, Tennessee July 2-6 for national conference and competition.
- Heard Superintendent’s report: Schools dismiss at 1 p.m.May 24-25. The central office will work a four-day workweek in June and July, with office hours 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday.

- Approved notifying certain probationary classified (support) personnel of the non-renewal of their contract for the 2017-2018 school year.
