New and old on tap tonight at Goat Island

Goat Island’s popular Richter’s Pils is a favorite at the brewery.

Something old and something new are on tap this evening at Goat Island Brewing.

The new will be the introduction of Goat Island’s latest product – Hefeweizen, a German wheat beer created by the local brewing company.

The old is actually Goat Island’s popular Richter’s Pils, a light brew discovered from an old recipe used by William Frederick Richter at the Richter Saloon in the late 1800s in Cullman.

“This is our most popular beer now and won a medal for Goat Island in Brewing,” Mike Mullaney, a co-owner of the brewing company, said.

This evening’s event will celebrate the success of Richter’s Pils and include the attendance of several descendants of William Richter.

“The recipe was found locally a few years ago and was handwritten in English and old German,” Mullaney said. “We had to send it off to Germany to complete the translation because that version of the language was so old.”

The new German wheat beer is formally being introduced as part of the celebration.

“In the tradition of German beer, it’s smooth and light,” Mullaney said. “We’re planning s fun evening with the history and new product.”

Goat Island’s taproom will open at 5 p.m. Music will begin at 7.

Goat Island is the area’s only craft beer brewing company. The company plans to begin canning later this year.
