Eddie Groves stepped down as Fairview’s boys basketball coach on Tuesday, ending a brief but promising two-year stint with the Aggies.

This past season, he led the Purple and Gold to 15 wins and a Class 5A, Area 12 Tournament title.

Groves informed the team of his decision on Monday.

“I just told them how proud I was to be their coach and of all of their accomplishments,” he said. “I feel like we’ve steadily been improving. Those kids are on the brink of having a special, special season. They’re ready to compete for the county. Whoever takes over for me, I’m happy and willing to assist in any way that I can. I’ve had a lot of good moments, but my time at Fairview is over.”

It’s currently unknown how quickly the Aggies plan to find a replacement or compile a list of possible candidates.

Groves’ successor, however, will have plenty of talent to work with including Bryson Fletcher and Luke Yarbrough, the latter of whom was deemed “the best player in the county” by Groves.

As for the longtime coach, his future plans are rather simple at this moment in time.

“The most important thing for me right now is my relationship with the Lord and my family,” he said. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with them. This has been quite a job and career. I’ve pretty much accomplished my goals in basketball. From my time with Huntsville to my time at James Clemens to my time at Fairview, I’ve met some wonderful friends, coached several great players and been, I hope, a small part in making a difference in a lot of lives. I’m happy to see what God has in store down the road.”
