Severe weather

A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect in northeast Cullman County until 3 p.m.

Tornado warning sirens were activated twice between 2 and 2:30 as a thunderstorm system passed through Battleground and into the Vinemont area. The system was moving toward Hartselle and Decatur.

Strong to severe thunderstorms will impact the Tennessee Valley area late Sunday, and although damaging winds are the main hazard, a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, mainly west of Interstate 65.

Cullman County is under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. and wind advisory remains until 10 p.m. Local community storm shelters will be opened.

The National Weather Service in Huntsville is assessing the timing of the storms and forecasts the initial line to move through Sunday afternoon before a second line later at night. Between 2 to 3 inches of rainfall is likely, with locally higher amounts possible, and this may produce brief localized flooding.

South winds will range from 20 to 25 mph, gusting up to 40 mph at times, especially on ridgetops. Unsecured objects such as trash cans, lawn furniture and tents will be susceptible to being blown around. The strong winds will make driving difficult, especially on east to west roadways and for high profile vehicles.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 83 before showers cool the area down to around 56. The chance for storms will linger into Monday morning with a high near 72 and wind gusts up to 25 mph.

Monday night will be much cooler, with a low around 49 degrees.
