Hanceville hosts citywide yard sale today

If you’ve been waiting for the right day to gather all the things you don’t need, head outdoors and put them up for sale, today may be your day, and Hanceville may be your place.

Hanceville will hold its annual citywide yard sale tomorrow, waiving yard sale permit fees to encourage both residents and out-of-towners into the city for a little grassroots economic activity.

The sale comes just ahead of a next week’s citywide landfill pickup, allowing people first to collect a little money on items they’d otherwise dispose of — before giving them a window of time in which to offload what’s left, free of charge.

“The free landfill pickup follows right after the yard sale day, with the idea being that it helps people to get their stuff cleaned up in a kind of organized way,” explained city clerk tania Wilcox.

“We have the yard sale first, and then they can get rid of the leftover stuff next week. Next week only, the city will pick those things up for free. It’s just a way for us to promote some spring cleaning.”

The free citywide landfill pickup runs from April 17 to April 21.

Mayor Kenneth Nail said you don’t have to own property in the city — or even be a Hanceville resident — to set up shop and sell your extra items this weekend.

“If you want to come into Hanceville and set up a yard sale on Saturday, that’s fine,” he said. “People can even set up in front of the Civic Center, or in front of City Hall — we don’t care, and we actually will be glad for people to do it.”
