For the fifth time in as many years, the Cullman County Farm-City Committee was honored this week as the state’s best.

At Thursday’s Alabama Farm-City Awards Luncheon, held in Birmingham, the local committee took home its fifth consecutive “Overall Best Farm-City Committee” recognition.

In the “Division I” category which includes the state’s more heavily populated counties, Cullman County also earned the Scrapbook Award and the award for Best National Ag Day Promotion.

Farm-City Week is observed each year, typically during the week leading up to Thanksgiving. The Farm-City program began in 1955, and continues to thrive, with Alabama’s counties staging local educational events that promote cooperation and understanding between farmers and urban dwellers.

For 2016, the Farm-City theme was “Agriculture: Stewards of a Healthy Planet.” Cullman’s Doris Patterson was named as Cullman County’s Volunteer of the Year at the 2016 event, and committee members attributed much of their success to her enthusiasm and energy.
