If great weather and early-onset spring fever have you itching to get out and find things to do today, you shouldn’t have to look very hard.
Cullman County is loaded with events and activities today, many of them combining food and fun with some charitable angle to benefit local causes.
Beginning early with the Cullman Kiwanis Club’s 61st annual pancake breakfast and continuing all the way through evening with Wallace State Community College’s presentation of “C’mon Everybody: The Elvis Presley Songbook,” you’re pretty much guaranteed a full Saturday.
So if you’re on the hunt for some worthwhile entertainment that’s close to home, today’s your day.
Here’s a rundown of what’s going on:
Cullman Kiwanis Club 61st Annual Pancake Breakfast
A decades-long tradition continues today when the Cullman Kiwanis Club begins serving pancakes and sausage at 6 a.m.
Now entering its seventh decade, the event has raised thousands of dollars for local students to assist with college costs, as well as in support of local organizations such as Cullman Caring for Kids.
This year’s Pancake Day begins at 6 a.m. at Cullman High School and continues until noon. Along with pancakes, sausage, syrup and plenty of butter, coffee and orange juice will be available.
A special part of the event is a silent auction that will include everything from cookware, Easter baskets, jewelry, a handmade quilt and many others items. The auction runs from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Autism Walk
Join the Autism Society of Alabama and help “solve the puzzle” of autism spectrum disorders today at Heritage Park in Cullman.
Things kick off at 8 a.m. today with the “5K race to solve the puzzle,” followed at 9:30 a.m. by the Autsim Walk. Cost of participation starts at $20 per person.
The annual Walk for Autism is the Autism Society’s biggest fundraising event, unifying thousands of participants statewide in support of the Society’s mission and projects.
Walk supporters say that autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S., affecting as many as 50,000 people in Alabama alone.
April walking tours
The Cullman County Museum is again hosting the April walking tours, which begin at 10 a.m. every Saturday this month, embarking from the steps of the museum (located at 211 2nd Ave. NE in Cullman).
The tours are free, and don’t require advance registration: just show up on time, and the guided tour is your for the taking. Also, the museum is open with free admission on Saturdays all month long. Contact Drew Green at 256-739-1258 for more information.
Today’s tour will be led by former Cullman Oktoberfest Burgermeister and local history buff Michael Sullins.
Safe Kids Expo
Sportsman Lake Park will play host to hundreds of children and their families as the annual Safe Kids Expo returns today.
Brooks’ Place, an outreach of the Cullman County Child Advocacy Center, organizes the event each April in honor of Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.
From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., kids can enjoy free snow cones, popcorn and drinks along with fishing, paddle boats, putt-putt golf, bounce houses, face painting and puppet shows.
Local businesses will join police, fire departments and other agencies to play games and give demonstrations. Children 12 years old and under will be admitted free, but must be accompanied by an adult.
Brooks’ Place utilizes specialized medical and mental health professionals and family/victim advocates to conduct forensic interviews so victims aren’t traumatized by repeated interviews from law enforcement and court officials. The process also preserves their testimony for possible criminal investigation and prosecution.
Sacred Heart Scripture lunch fundraiser
The Altar Society of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Cullman will hold its annual Scripture Luncheon today in the Family Life Center at the Church.
The luncheon will begin at 11 a.m. with a short social gathering, followed by a catered lunch. The program is open to anyone.
During the meal, the 12 individual table leaders will guide a discussion on the theme of their religious centerpiece. This year’s common core deals with how the scriptures have spoken to individuals in attendance.
Cost for this event is $10, with funds raised going to assist the women’s group in their work associated with upkeep of the church altar, supplies and other needs.
