Coming Soon: New ownership AMC for Cullman’s Carmike Cinemas

A new name is going up on the marquee at Cullman’s Carmike Cinemas as the movie theater changes its name to the AMC Marktplatz 10 under new corporate ownership.

Carmike Cinemas at the Marktplatz Shopping Center is changing hands as part of a $1.2 billion deal to make AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. the country’s biggest theatre exhibitor. The official rebranding is expected to be complete in April, and AMC says Carmike customers shouldn’t see any “significant changes (either increases or decreases) in ticket prices.”

In approving the merging in December, the U.S. Justice Department expressed concern over the loss of competition between movie theaters in 15 markets in nine states including Alabama. A condition of the acquisition required AMC or Carmike to sell a theater in each of those markets.

Going forward, every AMC theater will see “guest-friendly enhancements,” and renovations will be determined on a theater-by-theater basis, according to the company’s announcement.

Until the re-branding is finalized, Carmike customers can continue earning and using their loyalty reward points and gift cards. But you can’t sign up for Carmike Rewards; you’ll have to enroll in AMC’s rewards program instead.

AMC will continue to honor Carmike tickets, gift cards, rewards and other discount programs including the annual refillable popcorn bucket deal. However, those using Carmike Rewards must print their reward benefits at the theater before the conversion to AMC. Rewards printed elsewhere will not be accepted once the theater is re-branded as AMC.

For a limited time, AMC will continue to offer the $5 Tuesday and concession deals at recently acquired Carmike theaters, but patrons need to first sign up for an AMC rewards program.

Those with a Carmike popcorn bucket can still get refills for $4.25 through 2017, and all AMC theaters will sell popcorn buckets for $21 plus tax. If you are an AMC Stubs member, you can use your free large popcorn refill benefit toward a second refill (on the same visit) of your bucket.

Once the conversion is complete, moviegoers can use AMC’s website and mobile app to find showtimes, buy tickets and sign up for its loyalty program.

AMC, which was bought by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group in 2012, is the world’s biggest theater operator. Before the merger, AMC operated roughly 388 U.S. theaters with a total of 5,295 screens in 33 states and the District of Columbia as of the end of September 2016.

Its smaller rival, Carmike, based in Columbus, Georgia, has 271 theaters with a combined 2,917 screens in 41 states. The deal includes $585 million in cash and $250 million in AMC’s Class A common stock. AMC is also assuming about $367 million in debt in the deal.
