Gardendale, Mortimer Jordan earn weekend wins

Gardendale 11, Ramsay 4
The Gardendale baseball team ran five runs across in the first inning en route to an 11-4 win over Ramsay on Thursday at Rickwood Field.
After a big first inning, the Rockets came back for two runs in the second and four more in the fifth. Shortstop Manning Early went a home run shy of the cycle. He finished with a single, double and triple to go with an RBI in the win.
Also for Gardendale, Hunter Stokes went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs while Carter Harp drove home another. The win went to junior Gavin Walker, who threw a complete game with four strikeouts and no walks on four earned runs.
Gardendale 10, Oak Grove 2
Right-hander Drew Love took the mound on Saturday as Gardendale blew past Oak Grove, 10-2.
Love went the distance, recording 10 strikeouts and one earned run on five hits. He had plenty of help on the offensive end with Gardendale pushing three runs across in the second, one run apiece in the third, fourth and fifth to go with four more in the sixth.
Manning Early drove in two of those runs and Hunter Stokes logged a 2-for-2 outing with an RBI. Love, when he wasn’t striking folks out, finished 2-for-5 at the plate.
The Rockets visit Walker on Tuesday.
Mortimer Jordan 8, Clay-Chalkville 7
It took 13 innings to settle the dispute but, in the end, Mortimer Jordan’s Grason Nabors scored the game-winning run as Nick Overton hit into an infield error in the top-half of the final inning on Saturday. The 8-7 win improved head coach Shayne Carnes’ Blue Devils to 3-1 on the year.
Overton finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Mortimer Jordan. Catcher Caleb Hayes went for one hit and scored four runs on Saturday. Senior Patrick Burkett went 2-for-6 at the plate with one run scored.
The Blue Devils got big innings from senior pitchers Jack Singley and Burkett. Burkett, a left-hander, earned the win for his shutout performance. He allowed six hits and recorded five strikeouts. Singley started the game and went home with five strikeouts and as many earned runs.
For Clay-Chalkville, Connor Miles went 7-for-7 at the dish. According the the Cougars’ Twitter page, Miles broke a state record for hits in a single game.
Mortimer Jordan 6, Shades Valley 5
Mortimer Jordan came away with another nail-biter of a win Monday.
Nick Overton again drove home the winning run, this time in the seventh inning when he brought in Evan Smith. Overton finished the game 2-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI. Sophomore Garek Hall went for three RBIs of his own with a 2-for-3 outing.
Senior Trent Fletcher started the game for the Blue Devils (4-1). He recorded five innings of work with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Left-hander Iain Ellerbrock earned the win in two innings of shutout work. The sophomore struck out two Mounties in the Monday win.
Mortimer Jordan visits Pinson Valley on Tuesday.
