Matt Cahoon and Holly Pond’s indoor track and field team were seeing red over the weekend.

And that’s a good thing.

Cahoon manhandled the Class 1A-3A competition during the state indoor meet in Birmingham on Saturday, collecting gold medals in the high jump (6-06) and the shot put (44-11) to help the Broncos finish second overall and bring home the school’s first-ever red map trophy for a boys’ athletic program.

In the senior’s spare time, he also netted 16 points in a 68-46 victory over West Point to help the 3A No. 2 Green and White cap off their regular season with a 27-1 record and 11 straight victories.

If you’re going to accomplish all those tasks in a three-day span, why not add another feat to the list?

The Times’ Athlete of the Week accolade should do nicely.

Cahoon wasn’t alone on the podium, though, as Todd Schwab, Dylan Morton, Mason May and Jarrett Miller teamed up for a gold-medal showing in the 4×200-meter relay. The latter (Miller) also snagged a bronze in the high jump.

Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Bill Smith Buick GMC, is currently open to any spring-sport athlete. Nominations are often encouraged and can be submitted to jwinfrey@cullmantimes.com with the athlete’s name, school and statistics/accomplishments that make them a worthy candidate.
