HANCEVILLE — Defense still wins championships after all.

Top-seeded Good Hope proved the age-old adage 100 percent correct on Saturday afternoon, locking down No. 2 West Point for a 37-28 victory to claim this year’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament junior varsity boys crown.

The Raiders, who closed the season 14-2, held the Warriors to just four points in the third quarter and only 11 over the course of an extremely chippy second half to escape Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum with the hardware.

“We were able to keep them to under 30 points in a JV basketball game, so that’s awesome,” Good Hope coach Justin Aby said. “Defense I feel like won that game for us. It’s great for the kids.

“Hats off to to West Point and coach Brown. Great team, and he’s an even better coach. They did a great job.”

Aby, of course, had quite a few nice words to say about his own squad as well.

“It’s great for the kids,” he said. “This championship is no reflection on me. These kids, they came in this summer when they figured out coach (Drew) Adams was going to be the coach. They bought into his program, trusted it and ended the season with a championship.”

Cole Maddox scored Good Hope’s first six points of the fourth quarter to push his total to a game-high 10. Landyn Freeman (eight points), Michael Lowe (seven), Matt Hancock (five), Drew Maddox (four) and Josiah Cofer (three) also joined in the offensive fun for the county champions.

Both Maddoxes were named to the All-Tournament Team.

“It’s amazing,” said Cole, who credited the title to the Raiders’ collective drive and chemistry. “We’re all on the same page, and everyone’s unselfish with the ball.”

Landon Ray led West Point with eight points. Matt McDonald was close behind with seven, followed by Hunter Persall (six), Cameron Bates (three), Dalton White (two) and Noah Gammon (two).

McDonald and Persall were the Warriors’ All-Tournament picks.

“I’m not going to fault my guys on defense,” West Point coach Scott Brown said. “I thought we played well enough to win, but we just could not get the ball in the bucket.

“It’s a great group of guys, and it’s been a fun year. I’m just glad to be a part of it.”

Fairview’s Austin Turner and Holly Pond’s Kyler Chaney capped off the All-Tournament Team, which was handpicked by Johnny Thornton.
