Although a Cullman location for Academy Sports & Outdoors has not been announced, the national retailer is advertising on its website for a Cullman store director.

The ad was posted Jan. 23 and notes a location of Lee Avenue and Highway 69. That intersection’s landmarks include Chik-fil-A and Arby’s restaurants on the east side, and Bojangle’s and an Aldi grocery store on the west side. There is undeveloped land behind the restaurant establishments on both sides of Highway 69.

Dale Greer with the Cullman Economic Development Agency said he could not comment on the company’s intent at this time due to a confidentiality agreement.

Academy, based in Katy, Texas, has 225 stores in the Midwest and the South.

Academy Sports employees more than 25,000 and has sales exceeding $4.6 billion, according to its website.

Dick’s Sporting Goods, another major retailer, opened in Cullman in late 2015. It’s not uncommon for both Academy and Dick’s to be located in the same market area.

Currently the closest Academy location is in Decatur.
