HANCEVILLE — Fairview’s varsity girls won’t be going home early this year.

The second-seeded Lady Aggies exorcised their 2016 Cullman County Basketball Tournament demons with a lopsided 53-2 win against No. 7 Vinemont in Monday night’s first-round matchup at Tom Drake Coliseum.

With that task handled, they’ll now turn their attention to a semifinal outing against No. 3 West Point/No. 6 Good Hope Thursday at 7:30 p.m. hoping to avoid a setback similar to last year’s upset loss to the Lady Raiders.

For now, though, coach Mary Hartline is just happy to be back in the winners’ circle.

“I think being No. 1 last year put a lot of pressure on them,” she said. “We tensed up and that wasn’t a team you could afford to tense up on. This year, we got into the game and won. So that’s a good thing.”

The Purple and Gold opened the game on a 22-0 run before the Lady Eagles’ first and only basket at 5:22 in the second frame. They forced 21 turnovers, held the Red and White to a paltry 3 percent shooting and closed the triumph on a 31-0 outburst to improve to 20-6 this season.

Abbi Taylor collected a double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds) for Fairview, while Jada Golden tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Five other Lady Aggies scored at least four points in the win.

“The girls played as a team,” Hartline said. “That’s something they’ve done a lot this year. They’re together 24/7 and go to the gym all the time. I enjoy watching them play … most of the time (laughs).”

Vinemont’s lone points came via Sarah Smith.
