HANCEVILLE — It didn’t always come easy for Good Hope’s junior varsity boys against Fairview.
Until the second half, that is.
The top-seeded Raiders rolled past the No. 4 Aggies over the final 12 minutes to turn Monday night’s two-point halftime lead into a 54-35 semifinal victory at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament inside Tom Drake Coliseum.
The win punched the Red and White’s ticket to the championship game, where they’ll take on either No. 2 West Point or No. 3 Holly Pond Saturday at 4 p.m.
For Good Hope coach Justin Aby, it was definitely a tale of two halves.
“We started off the game a little slow,” he said. “We were hitting our shots, but our defense wasn’t where we wanted it to be. We did much better in the second half.”
Landyn Freeman and Drew Maddox hit a combined five treys in the first quarter, which helped the Raiders grab a 25-23 advantage heading into the locker room.
Any chance for an Aggie comeback was demolished in the third quarter.
The Red and White forced numerous turnovers, which led directly to transition baskets and a 17-point cushion entering the final stanza.
From there, it was all about running out the clock.
“Our guys really got after it in the second half,” Aby said. “We made some adjustments with our press and that allowed us to pull away and get the win.”
Cole Maddox led all Good Hope scorers with 15 points, while Drew Maddox (11), Freeman (eight), Josiah Cofer (eight) and Michael Lowe (six) also contributed multiple baskets in the triumph.
Fairview, meanwhile, was paced by Austin Turner’s 12 points. Kole Robinson (seven) and Slade Ryan (six) were the top scorers behind Turner.
The Raiders now have four days to prepare for Saturday’s title tilt.
“Both of those teams are great,” Aby said. “If we don’t show up to play, we aren’t going to win.”
