- Pinson Valley captured its sixth consecutive Jefferson County Tournament championship last week at Mortimer Jordan.
KIMBERLY—That makes it six in a row.
After last week’s tournament championship, some might call the Pinson Valley wrestling program a Jefferson County dynasty. The Indians cruised to a Jefferson County Tournament title, the school’s sixth consecutive county championship, with a 231-point showing at Mortimer Jordan High School.
“Two times to do anything is an achievement, but when you do something six times it’s almost expected. It’s something that we’ve done since these boys were in junior high,” said Pinson Valley head coach Gene Richardson. “It was an accomplishment and having 10 guys in the finals was pretty cool, too.”

Khymel Chaverst continued his strong junior season with an 8-3 decision over Damyan Melton. Tyler Johnson (184) outlasted Oak Grove’s Jacob Humphries in the championship match. Carial Tarter of Mortimer Jordan won the 147-pound finals with an 8-1 decision over Pinson Valley’s Eric Rogers. Fultondale’s Macon Edwards stayed perfect on the season with a 115-pound title. The junior has not lost a match since his freshman season at Hayden.
Pinson Valley and Gardendale will take the mat on Friday night in Mike Dutton Gymnasium. In the state’s first-ever team duals playoff the Indians will host Gardendale, Homewood and Helena starting at 6 p.m. Only one team will advance to the next round, which will begin on Tuesday.
“I think this group is all in. I think everybody really believes that we have a legit shot to be state champs, but it’s going to take each and every one of us to do it,” said Richardson. “This is a tight-knit group of kids that believe in each other and that’s what is going to give us a shot at [a championship].”
