Cold Springs’ Toni West and Fairview’s Cade Yeager couldn’t miss at the Cullman Elks local hoop shoot held at Cullman Middle School last Saturday.

West drilled 22 of 25 free-throw attempts to secure the Outstanding Shooter award on the girls side, while Yeager sank 23 of 25 before draining 5 of 5 in a shoot off to garner the same honor on the boys side. The prizes are doled out annually in honor of Robert C. Grant, the highest-ranking Elk in the state.

According to local hoop shoot director Donnie Handley, about 4,000 kids participated inside Cullman County this year.

Each school in the area sent its best shooters to the event. The Elks then narrowed the field down to six winners — a boy and a girl in each of the three age groups.

This year’s winners were West Elementary’s Olivia Smith and Good Hope’s Will Crawford (8- to 9-year-old); West Elementary’s Bailey Tetro and Yeager (10-11); and West and Fairview’s Mason Parker (12-13).
