- A dusting of snow in Vinemont Friday, January 6, 2016.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for 3-9 a.m. Saturday as bitterly cold temperatures will make it feel like anywhere from 5 degrees above to 5 degrees below zero.
Light snow will redevelop Friday evening, with the best chances of accumulating snowfall — possibly up to 2 inches — occurring southeast of a Scottsboro to Vinemont. Snow will diminish from west to east overnight into Saturday, however it will cause slick travel conditions in some areas.
Bitterly cold wind chills are also anticipated tonight as gusty north winds combine with temperatures dropping into the teens.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday. With temperatures in the mid-20s Friday afternoon, some bridges and overpasses are beginning to ice, according to the Cullman County EMA.
All roads in Cullman County are open and passable, but drivers are urged to slow down and be aware of possible slick conditions. Crews are treating trouble areas as they are reported, according to the EMA.
Crews were on the scene of a wreck on U.S. 278 West earlier today. We’ll update with more information as it becomes available.
Alabama Department of Transportation crews have prepared state highways and bridges to combat snow and ice conditions and will be actively working to keep highways open across the state during this winter weather event. Snow plows, graders and spreaders are ready to clear snow and deice roads as needed.
ALDOT crews on Thursday pretreated higher-volume state highways with salt brine and pretreating all bridges with Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA). This morning, crews performed additional pretreatments in some areas, including a secondary treatment of the Interstate 65 Tennessee River Bridge with CMA.
All lanes of I-65 and Interstate 565 and the outer lanes of Interstate 59 were pretreated, as well as the outer lanes of four-lane highways. Some two-lane highways were pretreated in higher-risk areas and as time allowed.
Currently, all highways remain open, but the public is urged to check www.algotraffic.com for alerts and road closure information, and to monitor their local news media for information about road conditions.
Travel conditions should be considered hazardous in areas where there is precipitation, whether it is snow, rain or a wintry mix. In areas where there has been precipitation, icy conditions or snowfall accumulation, please avoid travel where adverse conditions are present until roadway and weather conditions improve.
