The Holly Pond senior combined for 77 points in the King of the Smokies Tournament at Pigeon Forge during the final week of 2016, securing All-Tourney Team honors and helping the Class 3A No. 2 Broncos to a 2-1 showing against a loaded field. Jones scored 24 points in a win over New Richmond (Ohio), 28 in a loss to Meigs (Ohio) and 15 in a victory versus Seymour (Tenn.) to help his program improve to 17-1 overall entering the new year.

With those colossal efforts, Jones was named The Times’ latest Athlete of the Week — his second such selection of the season.

Teammate Griffin Morris, who also notched a spot on the All-Tournament Team, netted 18 and 19 points, respectively, in the outings with Meigs and Seymour, while Bailey Smith added 17 against New Richmond and nine versus Meigs, which went on to win the bracket.

Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Bill Smith Buick GMC, is currently open to basketball, indoor track and field, and bowling athletes. Nominations are encouraged and can be submitted to jwinfrey@cullmantimes.com with the athlete’s name, school and statistics/accomplishments that make them a worthy candidate.
