ALL-STATE FOOTBALL: Hernandez, Rice, Lovell, Elliott, Mann selected to respective 1st teams; 10 others also honored

- From left to right are West Point’s Alex Hernandez, Addison’s Noah Rice, Cullman’s Owen Lovell, Cold Springs’ Cayde Elliott and Addison’s Matthew Mann. All five players were named to their respective first teams following the release of the ASWA All-State Football Team late Saturday night.
Santa Claus came to Cullman County and delivered a wealth of Christmas cheer to its gridiron talent.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its 2016 All-State Football Team late Saturday night and numerous local standouts made the cut for their respective squads.
West Point’s Alex Hernandez, Addison’s Noah Rice and Matthew Mann, Cullman’s Owen Lovell and Cold Springs’ Cayde Elliott each happily unwrapped first-team gifts, while Addison’s Zeb Maze, Holly Pond’s Dylan Morton and Caleb Jones, Hanceville’s Kaine Yates, Vinemont’s Garrett Boland, Fairview’s Ragan Ashley and Cullman’s Hunter Brannon found second-team selections under the tree.
Hanceville’s B.J. Smalls, West Point’s Deven Jenkins and Cullman’s Tristin Skinner rounded out the nice list with honorable mentions.
The All-State Team was picked by the ASWA’s prep committee, which chooses from a host of athletes spanning seven classifications across the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The Alabama Independent School Association is also part of the process.
Finalists for Back and Linemen of the Year will be unveiled late Dec. 30 online and early Dec. 31 in print.
Hernandez gleaned a first-team spot as a Class 5A athlete just one week after securing All-County Overall MVP honors. The sublime senior amassed 145 tackles from the linebacker position, including 11 for loss, eight pass breakups, one sack, one interception and a timely forced fumble to help the Warriors grab their third straight postseason berth.
Not only that, but he totaled 602 rushing yards and six touchdowns on offense and even wrestled with kicking duties earlier in the fall before ceding those responsibilities to teammate Steven Rodriguez.
A man’s gotta rest, right?
“Alex is just the kind of football player every coach and team wants,” West Point coach Don Farley said. “If we asked him to block, he would block. If we asked him to tackle, he would tackle. If we asked him to run the ball, he would run the ball. He was really unselfish. Willing to do whatever needed to be done. Additionally, you just don’t get that many guys with his strength, size and speed. He was a durable guy, too. He’ll be tough to replace.”
It takes great players to make a championship run.
Luckily for Addison, it had two of the best in 1A.
Rice (athlete) and Mann (offensive line) each did their part to help the Bulldogs cap off a 13-1 season and the program’s first trip to the semifinals since 2005.
Rice did a little bit of everything — quarterback, safety, kick returner — while Mann anchored a stellar line that paved the road for Addison’s rushing attack, which was one of the best in all of 1A.
The former wrapped up his senior campaign with 1,389 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. He also threw for 418 yards and four TDs, while contributing 70 tackles, three interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on defense.
To top it all off, Rice is just a “good, coachable kid.”
“He’s got lots of talent, too,” Addison coach David Smothers said. “We moved him to quarterback his last season because he was just so athletic. He accounted for a lot of touchdowns on offense and saved a lot of touchdowns on defense. He was strong for us on our 2-point conversions as well. Noah just worked really hard and was a good leader for us all year.”
Of course, Rice and Co. wouldn’t have stuffed the stat sheet if not for Mann and the hogs up front.
Another critical senior, Mann started all 14 games and graded out in the top of all linemen each and every game. He also played on their defensive line and on special teams.
“It’s unreal how many pancake blocks that boy had,” Smothers said. “He came off the ball and blocked well for us. You can just watch all the clips on film, one after another. Pancake, pancake, pancake. Those guys go unnoticed most of the time, but Matthew was one of our best linemen this season. He’s probably one of the better ones I’ve ever coached, too.”
It takes a special kind of athlete to sit out a season only to come back without skipping a beat.
Turns out, that’s exactly what Lovell — who notched his spot at defensive back — is.
The 6-4, 225-pound Bearcat senior returned to Oliver Woodard Stadium this past fall after spending his junior year focusing solely on baseball — he’s a pretty good one — and went on to lead the team in tackles with 152. He also finished with 32 hammers, two pass breakups, a tackle for loss, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to help the Black and Gold reach the postseason with six wins.
“As good of a player as he is, he’s an even better kid,” Cullman coach Mark Britton said. “He was a physical force out there for us. He’s physically big and strong. He could shut down the run game because we had him coming downhill. The combination of his size and the speed he has was a threat to receivers. He had some big hits for us.”
Although Lovell, a Mississippi State signee and the state’s reigning Mr. Baseball, is likely destined for baseball greatness, Britton has no doubts he would be a tremendous football player in another life.
“A lot of college coaches were asking if he was playing two sports,” he said. “There’s no question he’d be special in whatever he chose.”
For most 2A programs, circumstances call for a bevy of two-way players in order to compete at the highest level.
Cold Springs was no different in 2016.
Elliott, who had only previously played defense in small doses, was moved to a full-time role in the secondary and flourished in a stellar way not even his coach and father Rod Elliott could’ve dreamed.
The senior standout corralled 68 tackles, picked off six passes, forced four fumbles and recovered three fumbles for the Blue and Gold, who tallied their third consecutive trip to the postseason. He was also named the All-County Defensive MVP for his exemplary role as a defensive back.
“We always played Cayde in spots the last few seasons, but this year he really became a leader on defense,” Elliott said. “Cayde had a knack for making plays and being instinctive. He certainly did on defense. Getting those turnovers, especially. That’s huge for us. We’re doing whatever we can to keep a team out of the end zone, so when we get those takeaways, it’s a big deal.”
Maze did more than enough for Addison to collect a spot on the second team as an athlete. The two-way phenom rushed for 724 yards and 19 touchdowns on 109 attempts, while making numerous plays at defensive line and kicking two field goals for the Bulldogs.
Dylan Morton (wide receiver) and Caleb Jones (athlete) grabbed second-team accolades after helping Holly Pond claim its first winning season since 2007 and first playoff bid since 2011.
Morton caught 42 passes for 860 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Jones ran for 1,170 yards and 15 scores on offense and came away with 89 tackles, four sacks and an interception on defense. He also had 368 yards receiving and three touchdown receptions.
Boland saved his best season for last at Vinemont, snaring a second-team mention at defensive back. The senior took a small break from under center to amass 106 tackles, five forced fumbles, four pass breakups, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Hanceville’s Kaine Yates (second-team defensive line) and B.J. Smalls (honorable mention running back) teamed up one more time for the Bulldogs in 2016. Yates, who was a first-team selection in 2014, polished off his senior season with 96 tackles, including nine for loss and four sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
Smalls, meanwhile, ran for 1,415 yards and 14 touchdowns on 184 carries. He also caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Ashley couldn’t have been a more important player for Fairview.
He was under center at quarterback, in the defensive backfield as a cornerback and even handled the Aggies’ punting duties during an exceptional senior season.
Ashley rushed for 634 yards and six touchdowns on 122 carries, completed 130 of 199 passes for 1,569 yards and 17 scores, and had myriad tackles, big plays and booming punts on defense and special teams en route to a second-team athlete accolade.
West Point’s Jenkins made up 1/5th of the Warriors’ stout offensive line and ended up taking away a honorable mention as his position. Jenkins graded out at 90 percent and produced 33 pancake blocks, while playing tackle, guard and center for the Maroon and White in their most recent playoff season.
Hunter Brannon (second-team offensive lineman) and Tristin Skinner (honorable mention kicker) capped off the area’s All-State honors following their fine senior years at Cullman.
An Alabama commit, Brannon graded out at 85 percent with 55 knockdowns. He participated in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game and was also a second-teamer back in 2015.
Skinner, meanwhile, booted through 10 of 11 field goal attempts and made all 42 of his extra points for the Bearcats. His right leg made a 49-yard field goal and produced 21 touchbacks.
