- Javon Daniel, center, receives a check on behalf of Cullman Caring for Kids from representatives of MyWay Transportation. The money will go to the food bank and purchase $35,000 pounds for local families.
MyWay Transportation donated $5,000 to the Cullman Caring for Kids food bank, but the Dodge City-based trucking company isn’t stopping there.
With the community food bank being inundated with more and more needy families, the business is challenging other trucking companies and industries to step up and donate whatever they can to support the non-profit. The $5,000 donation will buy upwards to 35,000 pound of food, said Cullman Caring for Kids Director Javon Daniel.
“Their donation is a tremendous boost for us, and they hope it will lead others to step up and help too,” he said. “We survive on the community’s support, and while we do get more donations around this time of year, we serve people 365 days a year. Once Christmas is over, it starts all over again in January. We need contributions that are continuous to keep up going through the year.”
Eligible low-income residents, families with young children and the elderly depend on the food bank, and this year, the number has ballooned from 500 families a month to nearly 700, Daniel said.
“The need has increased tremendously. Since June, we’ve had about 100 more families coming in each month. On Friday, we had 10 new families come in,” he said.
Eligible residents receive a bag with approximately 37 pounds of food and drinks. The non-profit also distributes items like baby food, diapers, wipes and school supplies for qualified families.
