- Mortimer Jordan quarterback Douglas Moore hands the ball to running back Spencer Brown (28) during the Blue Devils' playoff win over Etowah.
Seventh-ranked Mortimer Jordan advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday night with a, 44-30, win over No. 4 Etowah at Jimmie Trotter Field. The home team went for 22 points in the fourth quarter to secure the second round win.
Senior running back Spencer Brown battered Etowah for 241 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 35 carries. The UAB commit also delivered with three 2-point conversions in the win.
Mortimer Jordan (10-2) is scheduled to host Briarwood Christian (10-2) next Friday in the quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils hope to clean up ball security in Round 3, as they survived with five turnovers this week. Defensively, Mortimer Jordan responded with five turnovers of its own (four fumbles and one interception).
Mortimer Jordan’s massive fourth frame got started with a 2-yard touchdown rush from Brown. He later powered through from three yards out before Preston Wilson finished things off with a 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Senior quarterback Douglas Moore did much of the heavy lifting before that, as he scampered into the end zone from 12 yards out in the third quarter after connecting with Trey Peters on a 9-yard touchdown toss in the second.
Moore led the offense to 325 yards of offense while Etowah finished with 459 yards. Mortimer Jordan ran for 292 yards and threw for 33 in the playoff win.
