Two area teams were in action on Thursday night as Class 5A Mortimer Jordan and Class 3A Fultondale went on the road to close out the 2016 regular season. Both teams will open the state playoffs next Friday night.

Mortimer Jordan 14, Fayette County 0

There was little offense to be found in John Morgan Brown Stadium.

Class 4A Fayette County kept eighth-ranked Mortimer Jordan quiet on the offensive side, but not quiet enough. The final stat line gave the Blue Devils (8-2, 6-0) 10 first downs and 221 yards of total offense in the intra-class contest.

On the other side, it was Mortimer Jordan smothering the Tigers’ offense for four quarters. Fayette County managed only six first downs and 136 yards of total offense in the loss.

Both teams went scoreless through the first quarter, and senior Spencer Brown finally drew first blood with a 6-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in the opening half. The 2-point try was stopped.

Quarterback Douglas Moore later ran free for a 30-yard score with 2:15 left in the third frame. His scamper was followed up by a successful 2-point conversion from Brown to end the scoring at 14-0 in favor of the guests.

Moore completed 8 of his 14 attempts for 84 yards passing to go with his timely rushing touchdown. Brown went for a relatively slow night, at least by his standards: 94 yards rushing, one touchdown and one 2-point conversion off 20 calls.

As the Region 6 champions, Mortimer Jordan welcomes Pleasant Grove (4-5) next week for the first round of the playoffs.

Montevallo 16, Fultondale 12

Fultondale suffered its second loss of the season with a tough road test at No. 6 Montevallo Thursday night. The Bulldogs scored late and followed up with a red zone stop for a 16-12 non-region win.

Fultondale, the Region 6 champions, jumped out in front on a 31-yard touchdown from Derrick Moore. Montevallo (9-1) would quickly answer with a connection from Zac Oden to Tre’Shawn Brown.

Moore enjoyed a big night on a big stage, running for 218 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries for the Wildcats, who held a 12-10 advantage until Caleb Cottingham ran 37 yards to the end zone at the 3:38 mark of the fourth quarter.

Fultondale, trailing 16-12, did threaten as they marched into the red zone with less than a minute remaining, but the Bulldogs held on a fourth-and-1 for a tough win on senior night.

The Wildcats get back to work next Friday when Weaver visits in the opening round of the playoffs.
