PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Playoff plot thickens in Week 6 slate
Published 8:00 am Friday, September 30, 2016
Hey, everybody.
I’m back for yet another look the Cullman County prep football landscape.
There is a ton of good matchups this week, and I don’t want to keep you waiting — unless, of course, you’ve already skimmed ahead to your team —which is totally fine.
Before we sit down and have an in-depth discussion, though, remember to cast your vote in “The People’s Pick,” a series of Twitter polls that are posted on Rob Ketcham’s timeline (@rketcham) early each week.
Now we’re ready to hit some free throws … err … score some touchdowns.
% Cold Springs (3-2, 2-0 in 2A, R7) at West End (3-3, 1-2): If you love points, plan your night around this region clash.
The Eagles have won three straight after an 0-2 start, while the Patriots own a modest two-game win streak of their own.
I’m tempted to side with Cold Springs, but it’s only the Blue and Gold’s second road trip this season. They lost 26-24 in their previous trek out of Cranford-Stricklin Stadium back in August to 1A Berry.
Sorry, coach Elliott, use it as motivation.
% Jake’s Pick: West End
% Rob’s Pick: West End
% People’s Pick: Cold Springs (71 percent, 112 votes)
% Pell City 4-1, 2-0 in 6A, R7) at Cullman (3-3, 1-2): Here’s the thing.
The Bearcats have looked really good in their three wins and less than stellar in their three losses.
For me, Cullman is going to need its best game of the season should it want to pick up a huge region victory over the Panthers.
Pell City can score points and play defense with the best of 6A, which could cause many problems for the home team.
Mathematically, the Black and Gold wouldn’t be eliminated from postseason contention with a loss.
But they’re going to need to step it up in the next three weeks.
% Jake’s Pick: Pell City
% Rob’s Pick: Pell City
% People’s Pick: Cullman (66 percent, 150 votes)
% Winfield (3-2, 0-2 in 4A, R6) at Good Hope (0-5, 0-3): The Raiders came oh-so-close to their first victory of the year last week, dropping a 42-39 heartbreaker at Cold Springs.
Unfortunately for Good Hope, however, I don’t think the Pirates are the answer to what ails its program.
Winfield has been strong in its three wins, while its losses have come to Haleyville and Cordova, which are ranked third and fifth, respectively, in 4A.
I do think the Raiders will win this year. That said, I don’t think it’s going to be tonight.
% Jake’s Pick: Winfield
% Rob’s Pick: Winfield
% People’s Pick: Winfield (71 percent, 126 votes)
% Hanceville (2-4, 1-2 in 3A, R6) at Susan Moore (0-5, 0-2): Talk about a tale of two Bulldogs.
It’s been the best of times and worst of times so far for coach Craig Flanigan’s group.
Hanceville has been Jekyll and Hyde through six games, while Susan Moore has struggled each and every time its taken the field.
If the Purple and Gold can avoid anything having to do with last week’s letdown versus Clements, then I think they should claim this one.
Give the ball to B.J. Smalls, cut down on penalties.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
% Jake’s Pick: Hanceville
% Rob’s Pick: Susan Moore
% People’s Pick: Hanceville (55 percent, 130 votes)
% Holly Pond (4-1, 1-1 in 3A, R6) at Locust Fork (4-2, 2-1): How long have the Broncos waited for a game like this?
A road victory against the Hornets tonight would all but lock up Holly Pond’s first playoff berth since 2011.
That’s not a jinx, that’s a fact.
It won’t be an easy task, however, as Locust Fork has been nothing short of solid so far in 2016.
The key for me is how the Broncos play on offense. They’ve scored at least 32 points in every bout this season, while the Hornets have surpassed that total only once, which came in a 35-20 triumph over Vinemont.
I honestly don’t know which squad to pick, so I’m going to flip a quarter.
% Jake’s Pick: Holly Pond
% Rob’s Pick: Locust Fork
% People’s Pick: Holly Pond (58 percent, 135 votes)
% Priceville (0-5, 0-3 in 4A, R8) at Vinemont (1-4, 0-3 in 3A, R6): The Eagles enter tonight’s game with a chip on their shoulder.
I think — and I’m sure many others do as well — Vinemont is much better than its 1-4 record indicates.
In three of those losses, the Red and White entered the fourth quarter with a chance to win. They just couldn’t make the big play when needed.
Look for that to change … and look for the Eagles to soar over a team that’s allowed an average of 49 points in three road games this season.
Have fun, Garrett Boland.
% Jake’s Pick: Vinemont
% Rob’s Pick: Vinemont
% People’s Pick: Vinemont (63 percent, 120 votes)
% Fairview (2-3, 0-2 in 5A, R6) at West Point (2-3, 2-1): Visit www.cullmantimes.com or pick up a Thursday edition for a complete preview of this all-important county and region matchup.
% Jake’s Pick: West Point
% Rob’s Pick: West Point
% People’s Pick: West Point (70 percent, 168 votes)
% Addison (7-0, 4-0 in 1A, R7) at Decatur Heritage (4-2, 2-1):
Predictions for this area contest were made prior to the Bulldogs’ 26-21 road victory Thursday night. We pinky promise. Let’s be honest, though, I could have changed it.
