Fultondale Police announced today that they have officially charged the man they say is responsible for a home invasion in Fultondale over the weekend, according to Fultondale Police Chief David Smith.

Edwin Gabriel Conley, of Center Point, is charged with two counts of first-degree kidnapping, two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of first-degree burglary and one count of cruelty to animals.

Just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, police allege a suspect burglarized a home on Walker Chapel Road, near the intersection with Ellard Road. Though the homeowners were not in the residence at the time, a dog was in the home and was shot by the intruder, according to Smith.

Despite initial reports that there may have been multiple intruders, Smith said Wednesday that Conley acted alone and there was not a second perpetrator.

“I hope this puts people’s minds at ease,” Smith said.

After the burglary, Smith said the suspect went to the house next door, kicked in the back door, beat and tied up the occupants, an elderly man and his adult son, and took items from them.

Fultondale Police arrived on the scene, transported the victims to a local hospital and began their investigation.

Smith said he was impressed with the work his detectives and forensic investigators did in the case. “They did a wonderful job,” Smith said. “We had a person of interest in less than 24 hours, even though we started from scratch.”

According to Smith, there was no obvious connection between any of the victims and Conley, and it appears to be a random act.

Conley is in the Jefferson County Jail on those charges as well as other charges from another agency. Smith said charges may be pending from additional agencies as well. His bond has been set at $800,300 just for the Fultondale charges.
