No. 5 Mortimer Jordan runs to first win

Behind a strong running game, No. 5 Mortimer Jordan notched its first win of the season over Class 6A Pelham, 42-14, on Friday night at home.

The Panthers (0-2) held a 7-6 lead after one quarter, but it was all Mortimer Jordan (1-1) from there. Senior Spencer Brown powered in from a yard out to give his team a 14-7 lead at the 11:24 mark of the second quarter moments before Landon Sanford scooped up a Pelham fumble and went 30 yards for a 21-7 cushion.

Brown finished the night with five touchdowns, many of the short-yardage variety, but his final blow went 67 yards to the end zone with 4:38 remaining in the third frame. His fifth touchdown ended the scoring at 42-14.

The big back carried the ball 27 times for 192 yards and five touchdowns to go with a two-point conversion.

Overall, the Blue Devils out gained Pelham 315 yards to 235. 251 of those Mortimer Jordan yards came on the ground, leaving 64 yards to the passing game.

The Blue Devils open Class 5A, Region 6 play next Friday at Springville.
