Gardendale found itself in one of the toughest environments in the state—J.F. Moore Stadium—on Friday night, and didn’t flinch.

Muscle Shoals had not suffered a home loss since 2010 (37-0), but the Rockets (1-0) put that streak to an end by a final of 14-10 to start the 2016 season.

According to statistics provided by Gardendale athletics, the Rockets outgained Muscle Shoals 319 to 118.

Senior running back Omari Burton gave the Rockets an early advantage, reaching paydirt for a 7-0 lead just minutes after kickoff. His partner in the backfield, Demetrius King, broke through for six with 1:38 remaining in the second quarter. King’s score gave the visitors a 14-3 advantage, and that’s all they would need to pull the road win.

Gardendale rolled up 183 yards on the ground to go with another 136 through the air. Defensively, they held the Trojans (0-1) to only 35 passing yards and a 3-for-14 effort on third downs.

The Rockets play their home opener next Friday against James Clemens.
