CORDOVA — Despite early offensive penalties and miscues, the Cordova Blue Devils pulled ahead late Friday night to defeat Mortimer Jordan 21-14 at Hudson-Kirby Field.
Cordova committed four turnovers and committed eight penalties for 80 yards. However, they outgained Mortimer Jordan on offense 328 yards to only 99.
Cordova’s first drive ended when Demetrius Kirk fumbled the snap and Mortimer Jordan recovered. A personal foul on Cordova put Mortimer Jordan near midfield, and eight plays later Spencer Brown ran in from 22- yards out to put the visiting Blue Devils up 7-0.
Two possessions later, Cordova’s drive seemed stopped at the 36-yard line when Kirk was caught short of the first down, but he pitched back to Javion Hill who ran it down to the eight-yard line. Hill ran into the end zone on the next play to put Cordova on the board and notch the game at 7-7.
Mortimer Jordan was held to three-and-out again and was forced to punt. Cordova, however, would turn the ball over on downs deep in their own territory. The next play Brown ran in untouched from the 28-yard line to put Mortimer Jordan up 14-7 at the half.
Much of the third quarter was scoreless, with Cordova and Mortimer Jordan turning the ball over. Chase McDaniel recovered a fumble for Cordova and Kirk’s pass was intercepted in the endzone by Kendall Hall. With 3:16 remaining in the quarter, Kolbi Fuqua intercepted Chase Crane’s pass and ran it back 30 yards for a Cordova pick six, making the score 14 all going into the fourth quarter.
Cordova took the lead on its next drive when Kirk connected with Ty Chatman, who beat Elsberry in a foot race to the end zone for another Cordova touchdown, giving the hosting Blue Devils the lead for the first time of the night with 11:17 left in the game.
Cordova’s defense dominated as Mortimer Jordan failed to convert another first down for the remainder of the game.
Cordova’s Cade Adkins ran 26 yards down to the 11-yard line where Cordova took a knee to run out the clock.
Javion Hill ran for 116 yards and touchdown on the night. Demetrius Kirk went 10 of 17 for 83 yards and an interception passing.
