- The 2016 Gardendale Fire Department softball team.
The Gardendale Fire Department has done it again.
The Nozzle Jocks, as they’re called at the ballpark, are a perfect 4-0 in two seasons of Gardendale City Softball Tournament play. The team mounted a mammoth comeback to best the Gardendale Police Department in the semifinals before beating the Public Works team in the championship game on Saturday night at Gardendale High School.
The Nozzle Jocks played from behind for much of the semifinal game, but always found offense when they absolutely had to. Trailing 12-6 to the Lawmen in the bottom of the final frame, the Fire Department rallied for six runs to force extra innings, and eventually won the dispute, 16-15, in seven innings.
Gardendale’s public works department, better known as The Dirt Movers, reached the championship game in similar fashion, sending 11 runs across in the final two innings of play to down the Gardendale Field Preppers, 15-9, in extras.
All proceeds from the second-ever City Softball Tournament go to Cornerstone Ranch—a nonprofit Christian organization in Gardendale. Last year’s tournament, which was also won by the Nozzle Jocks, raised funds for the Miracle League Raymond G. Doss Playground of Miracles.
