PREP FOOTBALL: Eagles prepare for season with appetite for success

Cold Springs’ River Banks, center, attempts to fight off a block while chasing down a ball carrier during a fall camp practice on Thursday. The program is looking for its 3rd straight playoff berth.

COLD SPRINGS — Here are some fun facts.

Cold Springs leads all county football schools in wins (20) over a three-year stretch dating back to 2013.

The Eagles are also just one of three area programs to collect back-to-back postseason berths the past two seasons, with West Point and Addison being the others.

Not too bad.

For Cold Springs, however, it’s not nearly enough.

The main goal for the Blue and Gold during their opening week of fall camp has been focusing on one day and one opponent at a time.

Their end game? Hosting, then winning a playoff matchup in Class 2A.

Coach Rod Elliott has plenty of experienced talent returning on both sides of the ball and can easily turn his group into a contender come November if all the cards fall into place.

While the squad’s potential success is still a few months away, take time to enjoy a quick glance below at this year’s Cold Springs Eagles and check back later for a full story, roster and team picture in The Times’ annual football preview section on Thursday, Aug. 18.

2016 Cold Springs Eagles At-A-Glance

Head coach: Rod Elliott, ninth year

Last year’s record: 6-5

Key departures: Christian Crandall, RB/DB; Drew McClendon, LB/TE; Blake Harbison, LB/TE; Levi Harris, LB/TE; Jimmy McSpadden, OL

Key returners: Nic Rollo, RB; Fisher Willoughby, RB/DB; Cayde Elliott, QB/DB; Wyatt Swann, OL; Tyler Rollo, OL/DL; Seth Edgeworth, OL/DL; Jon Campbell, OL/DL; River Banks, DB/RB; Justin Jones FB/LB; Colby Williams, DL; Trevor Slayton, ATH

Key newcomers: Calvin McNabb, TE/LB; Mason Myrick, TE/LB;  Brian McAnnally, OL/LB; Kevin Brakefield, P/WR/LB; Payton Parsons, OL/DL

Odds and ends: Cayde Elliott, who’s played exclusively at quarterback the past three seasons, will also join the defense as a cornerback … The Eagles added Lee Ellison to the staff as the secondary coach … Although they’ll continue to be a run-heavy offense, the Blue and Gold have worked quite a bit on their passing game during the offseason  — just don’t expect 50 attempts per outing.

Coach speak: “We either played really, really good or really, really bad last season. I don’t know what happened. I’ve been working on figuring that out. We’ve got to work really hard to compete in all 10 games this year. We’ve got to get our hunger back.” — Rod Elliott

Player speak: “I don’t really care what we do on offense as long as we are scoring points and winning on Friday nights, but throwing the ball is a lot more fun than handing it off I guess.” — Cayde Elliott

“Our motto is ‘Get all in.’ Everybody’s coming together. I think we can accomplish anything we set our minds to this season.” — Nic Rollo

“We’re just glad to be back out here. It’s really hitting us that we can’t take a day for granted heading into this season. Especially when you are a senior like I am.” — Fisher Willoughby
