City of Kimberly to support law enforcement

In the public comments portion of last week’s Kimberly City Council meeting, board member John Richardson announced that the city will be showing support for police officers by burning blue lights throughout the community. Residence supporting the men and women in blue will be mounting blue light bulbs on their homes.

“We would like for Kimberly to follow in our (the council’s) support by putting blue lights out for our police officers,” said Richardson.

Kimberly’s act of support will be ongoing.

The council also announced a concrete date for “Blue Devil Day,” which will serve as an unofficial launching point for Mortimer Jordan’s 2016 football season. The tailgate party will be held at Memorial Park in Kimberly on Saturday, Aug. 13. According to a press release, the event is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and continue late into the evening.

Fans will begin by cheering the team into Memorial Park with a “Blue Devil Walk.” From there, barbecuing, music and tailgating games will commence.

In other business, the council:

▪ purchased a sliding truck bed ($1,500) for the city’s new pickup

▪ voted to install a drop ceiling for $3,975 at the fire station, which will also be getting a fresh coat of paint in eight rooms.

▪ approved pay raises for six city employees, totaling an estimated $11,398

▪ voted to replace doors at the community center for $3,200

▪ declared a fire truck as surplus material. The Kimberly Fire Department will use parts of the truck to decorate the station.
