ASWA preseason football poll: Mortimer Jordan starts No. 2

Published 11:08 am Wednesday, August 3, 2016

The Alabama Sports Writers Association has released its preseason high school football rankings for all seven classifications and Mortimer Jordan is sitting pretty.

Coming off their first state championship game berth, the Blue Devils land at No. 2 in the Class 5A poll behind defending state champion St. Paul’s. Fourth-year head coach Dusty Goode will field nine new offensive starters in the season opener at Class 4A No. 3 Cordova on Thursday, Aug. 18.

Goode recently spoke of fighting complacency at Jefferson-Shelby County High School Football Media Days.

A few miles south, Class 6A Gardendale is missing from the preseason poll despite back-to-back quarterfinal finishes in 2014 and 2015. The Rockets did get consideration with two votes following a 10-3 season.
