Gardendale Council prays for police

- Gardendale city leaders held a prayer of protection, peace and safety for police officers following their council meeting on Monday night. The council members and guests prayed over Police Chief Mike Walker as a representative of his department and other departments around the country. Members of the council discussed how deeply recent tragedies had touched them and Walker talked about the stress of threats not only to officers, but of new threats to the families of officers in some areas of the United States.
The Gardendale City Council adjourned their meeting on Monday night and immediately gathered at the front of the council chambers to have a prayer of protection and comfort for Gardendale Police and police officers around the country in the wake of shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge that claimed the lives of multiple police officers.
During the meeting, Mayor Stan Hogeland had choked up as he delivered a devotional about how deeply the recent shootings have impacted him.

During his report, Council Member Will Hardman asked that the council hold the prayer following the meeting.
In other business, the council:
•approved an ordinance that would accept the streets in English Village as well as other public improvements.
•had a first reading of ordinances to accept Summit Boulevard as a city street and amend a zoning ordinance to allow more than one home occupation per dwelling.
Both items will be voted on at the next meeting.
•approved a resolution to authorize Hogeland to enter into a 12-month agreement with Xceligent for commercial data services at a cost of $200 per month.

•discussed the upcoming Leadership North Jefferson County program hosted by the Gardendale Chamber of Commerce.
Hogeland challenged the mayors of other north Jefferson cities to get involved and send employees through the program.
