Fultondale forms education building authority

The Fultondale City Council on Monday voted to form a Public Education Building Authority to assist the city and Jefferson County Board of Education as they move toward the construction of a new school or schools in the city of Fultondale.

Mayor Jim Lowery said he wanted to make it very clear that the group would only serve to facilitate infrastructure and other needs for a new school within the county system, but was not in any way a step toward a separate city school system.

“We are doing something to assist, not withdraw,” Lowery said.

He also compared the appointed three-person board to an industrial or commercial development board that works to facilitate creation of those sectors in the city.

In other business, the council:

•denied a business license for Dan’s Knives to be located at the Jet Pep on Walker Chapel Road. The city cited and ordinance that says two businesses cannot operate at the same address. The police chief and building inspector also recommended the application be denied. The owner, Dan Yeager addressed the council and asked that they reconsider.

•passed a resolution authorizing Lowery to renew an agreement with Revenue Discover Services to collect the city’s sales, use, lodging and rental taxes.

•passed a resolution authorizing Lowery to seek grant funding for sidewalks, specifically near the elementary school and in neighborhoods that have requested sidewalks.

•approved an inter-jurisdictional mutual aid agreement with Forestdale Fire District.
