- Don't wash your produce immediately
With the summer season upon us farmer’s markets are springing up in town squares across the country. Farmer’s markets offer up fresh, and often local produce as well meats and dairy products for consumers. But for those who have never been to a farmer’s market before, it can be a little bit overwhelming. The Massachusetts’ Department of Agricultural Resources offers a few tips to start your shopping right.
If you don’t know where your local farmer’s market is located, you can search United States Department of Agriculture’s list.
Bring your own (reusable) bags
Plastic bags can easily tear, which you don’t want to happen when you are walking around. Reusable bags are also better for the environment, and take up less space in your home, plus one bag is easier to carry.
According to Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, between 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed each year worldwide, and one reusable bag can eliminate an average of 1,000 plastic bags during its lifetime.
Bring cash, preferably small bills
Cash is the easiest currency, plus not every stand may be able to accept a credit/debit card. You will also have to pay separately every stand and some businesses or cards may charge an extra fee to process a purchase under $5 or $10.
Make a list
Making a list is the easiest way to know exactly what you need and how much of it you need, which lessens the chances of your food spoiling or going to waste. According to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources “American families throw away 14% of the food thy buy, often because it spoils.”
Ask questions
Talk to the vendors about what is in season, what is about to be in season, how to pick the freshest produce or for cooking tips. You can also ask the vendor to help you select produce that will be ripe later in the week when you will be eating it.
Dress comfortably and be prepared for the weather
Many farmer’s market are outside on grass or rock lots so wearing comfortable shoes can save you from injury. Most farmer’s markets are held rain or shine as well, and so you might want to grab an umbrella.
Go straight home afterwards
Go straight home and put away your purchases. Do not let fresh produce sit in your car, if you cannot go straight home bring a cooler.
You should put your fruits and vegetables in separate drawers, because fruits produce ethylene which speeds up ripening.
Don’t wash your produce immediately
Don’t wash your fruits and vegetables until you are ready to eat them. When you are ready, wash them under running water, soaking them increases the possibility of cross contamination.
