- Coaching change
More change has come to the Mortimer Jordan basketball program.
A little over a month after the girls team changed head coaches, the boys team followed suit. Former Thompson head girls coach Josh Golden was approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education on June 7 to become the new head boys basketball coach for the Blue Devils.
He fills an opening left by Daniel Foy, who had led the program over the past two seasons, resulting in consecutive Class 5A, Area 11 championships. Foy ended his second stint at Mortimer Jordan with a Northeast Sub-Regionals loss to Alexandria, ending the 2015-16 season at 20-11 overall.
“Daniel Foy, all I can say is good things about him. He did a good job while he was here and we appreciate it,” said Mortimer Jordan head football coach and athletics director Dusty Goode.
The details surrounding Foy’s exit remain unclear.
With Golden, Mortimer Jordan’s basketball future looks bright. Although he is coming out of a three-year stretch in the girls game, Golden has more than proven himself as a winner on the boys side.
“I’ve spent my whole career coaching boys,” said Golden. “I’m very excited to get back to the boys side. The biggest thing is the game is just a lot faster.”
Before going to Thompson, where he led the girls to a 71-23 mark over his three seasons at the helm, Golden lifted Class 5A Sylacauga into the boys Final Four in his first season (2011-12) as head coach. Before that, he made time for two AISA state championships at Tuscaloosa Academy in 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Golden hopes his up-tempo brand of play will translate well to a deep Blue Devils’ roster.
“We want to be able to dictate tempo and score in transition,” said Golden. “I think we’re going to be pretty deep this year, be able to play a lot of guys, which is going to allow us to be able to get out and run and play fast in transition and pick the pressure up defensively.”
Golden already likes what he sees from his new players.
“They don’t like taking days off. They want to be working and they want to be in the gym, so that’s another thing that I’m excited about,” said Golden, as he drove to Hazel Green High School for his team’s first camp of the summer.
