- Luke Wilson, seen here during his signing ceremony with Wallace State, was the Class 6A, North 5 sub-state champion Monday at TP Country Club.
Cullman High’s Luke Wilson checked off the latest item on his senior to-do list Monday, securing the Class 6A, North 5 sub-state title with a 3-under 69 at TP Country Club.
The low score cleared the field by three strokes and easily advanced the Wallace State signee to next week’s state tournament in Huntsville. The 36-hole season-ending event is slated for Monday and Tuesday at RTJ at Hampton Cove.
Wilson said his ball-striking was “phenomenal” and putting “lacked a little,” though he was hardly complaining.
“It feels great going to state and getting out of sub-state with a 69,” he said. “It is something I’ve been trying to achieve all year, and I’m ecstatic that I have reached my goal for the year. Now, my next goal is to win state.”
Holly Pond’s Dawson Foust carded an 81 at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery to force a four-way tie for both individual qualifying spots in the 3A, South 2 sub-state tourney. The junior lasted three playoff holes before ultimately being eliminated.
Fairview’s boys came up short in their bid for a state tournament berth, placing sixth overall with a team total of 360 in the 5A, North 4 sub-state tournament at Gunter’s Landing.
Hunter McKelvy (80), Austin Scott (90), Noah Walker (94) and Seth Lancaster (98) contributed the Aggies’ counting scores.
“I’m proud of this group,” coach Kurt Knight said. “They had a great year. The seniors will be missed.”
