The city of Gardendale has taken steps to place a traffic light at the intersection of Fieldstown Road and Shady Grove Road. At the regular council meeting on Monday, the council approved two resolutions to begin the project.
Originally the city was attempting to have the light placed through a grant process, but the grants were delayed so the city has decided to take the project on without the grant money.
Mayor Stan Hogeland said at the meeting that the city was “aware of the dangers” at this intersection and felt it needed to get involved and get the light placed.
The resolutions passed at the meeting give Hogeland the authorization to begin entering into contracts to begin the preparation and installation of the light.
Hogeland said he hopes to have the project completed by the first day of school for the 2016-2017 school year.
In other business, the council:
•approved an event application for the annual Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Alabama.
•approved an event application for the annual Magnolia Festival 5k run.
•heard a first reading of a proposed ordinance that would allow BZA to approve certain special exemptions and to further regulate agricultural district area and dimensional regulations. The matter will come up for vote at the first meeting in June.

•approved a resolution to promote Jeremey Blackburn to full-time unskilled laborer.

•heard from Walker that the department is also participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back on April 30 in the lobby of the police department. This event allows people who have old prescription drugs to turn them in without risking compromising their safety, privacy or allowing the drugs to fall into the wrong hands. Medications can be turned in if they are no longer needed or expired. They will be disposed of properly by the DEA and police department.
