The Friday funeral service for Mother Mary Angelica is expected to make travel difficult for local motorists along a few roads in areas near the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry said the heaviest traffic issues are expected along U.S. 31 South in Hanceville, Alabama 91 and County Road 747. He also said Interstate 65 will likely experience times of greater congestion in Cullman County before and after the funeral.

“Our top priority is to ensure our citizens are not impacted a great deal, but we certainly expect a lot of traffic in these areas,” Gentry said. “Law enforcement agencies are working with the Alabama Department of Transportation, state law enforcement as well as Cullman EMS and fire departments. We also have the involvement of the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency.”

ALDOT will be placing signs along U.S. 31 and Interstate 65 for visitors to know how to reach the funeral. Traffic increases are expected today as funeral events are planned throughout the week for Mother Angelica. News of her passing on Easter has been reported around the world and those attending the funeral are expected to arrive from several states.

Eternal Word Television Network, which was started by Mother Angelica, reaches 144 countries and millions of households. The Shrine near Hanceville also attracts thousands of visitors each year.
