Living in faith

The passing of Mother Mary Angelica on Easter was the end of a long, inspiring earthly journey in which faith, humility and unyielding commitment to God touched millions of lives from Cullman County to around the world.

Widely recognized as the founder of Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) in a garage in Irondale in 1981, Mother Angelica established a global outreach in Christian ministry and brought greater understanding of the Catholic faith eventually to people in 144 countries. Determined to operate the station without paid advertising, she struggled at times to avoid bankruptcy and relied on her faith to lead the way. As many who knew her, relying on faith worked and the station soon expanded and found financial stability through donations.

Born Rita Rizzo in Canton, Ohio, she came from a troubled home. Her parents divorced when she was a child and she struggled with her mother to have enough food and a regular home. After many hardships she entered the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration in Cleveland at the age of 21. There, she took the name of Sister Mary Angelica of the Annunciation. Faced with more trials following a serious injury, she trusted again in God and moved forward with her work.

Not only did she establish EWTN, but she led the building of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament near Hanceville.

The defining point in her life is that no matter the circumstances — struggle or success — Mother Angelica kept her faith and employed a tenacious approach to working for what she believed was right. She was a respected ambassador of her faith, a kind and humble servant, and an inspiration to those she met and those who worked alongside her.

EWTN appears to have a bright future as it attracts a wide audience even beyond the Catholic faith. The story of her faith and success is timeless. While Mother Angelica has passed from the world, her consistency and dedication to faith and the plight of people around the world will always be an inspiring example.
