Corinne Phillips (right) has now mailed packages containing hand-knitted hats to all 50 states in the United States with the help of her army of knitters.

Few people have a chance to touch the lives of thousands of people in all 50 states and five foreign countries, but Corinne Phillips has done just that.

Phillips started her nonprofit, Hats for Health, when she was just 12 years old. She decided to knit hats for premature babies who need to conserve body heat in any way possible. Phillips has also made hats for cancer patients and has recruited an “army” of knitters to help her reach her goals.

To date, she has taught 30 free knitting classes to those who want to help her cause. The hats, regardless of size, are made on a loom, which allows more knitters to be involved because of the ease of production.

Then, Phillips connects with organizations in the other states, either independently or through the American Red Cross “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign, to deliver or mail hats to those in need.

Phillips has personally delivered hats to many states and even traveled to Jamaica on a mission trip to teach women in the impoverished area to knit hats to sell in markets.

Through her work, Phillips was named the Alabama 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community award winner and was recently named the Alabama AXA Achiever, an award that grants a $10,000 scholarship to the college of her choice. Phillips is currently in the running to be one of the 15 AXA winners to receive an additional $15,000 scholarship.

Now a senior in high school, Phillips mailed hats to the last seven states on Friday. She sold brownies to raise the money for postage.
