County provisional ballots counted; No impact on primary election outcomes
Published 5:45 am Thursday, March 10, 2016
- Cullman County Probate Judge Tammy Brown opens provisional ballots Tuesday from the March 1, 2016 primary election.
It’s been more than a week now since Cullman County residents turned out to vote in record numbers for the primary, but now the results are officially in the book.
On Tuesday, Cullman County Probate Judge Tammy Brown, the county’s head election official, opened 18 provisional ballots, including one absentee, with other election officials to confirm the final tally. The provisional ballots did not affect the outcome of any of the races and should be certified by the state this week.
A ballot is deemed provisional if it has some kind of irregularity — for example, a voter didn’t select a candidate for a race or voted for more than one. Of the 17 provisional ballots cast at local polling places, 16 were Republican and one Democratic.
Of the 16 Republican ballots, presidential frontrunner Donald Trump picked up 14 votes and fellow GOP candidate Ted Cruz two.
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby got 10 votes and challengers Johnathan McConnell picked up 3 and Marcus Bowman one. There were two ballots with no votes — or under votes — in the senate race.
In the U.S. Representative for the Fourth District race, incumbent Robert Aderholt netted nine more votes and challenger Phil Norris four, with three under votes.
For the Place 3 Associate Supreme Court Justice, incumbent Tom Parker got 12 more votes and challenger Donna J. Beaulieu one, with three under votes.
In the Alabama Public Service President race, incumbent Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh got seven votes to challenger Terry Dunn’s six, with six under votes.
For Cullman County Commission Chairman, candidate Darrell Hicks picked up eight votes to incumbent Kenneth Walker’s two and fellow challenger Eric Parker’s three. There were three under votes.
In the District 1 (West Point) county school board race, incumbent Gene Sullins and challenger Patrick Klein each got one vote, with one under vote. In the race for the District 3 (Holly Pond) seat, challenger Destry Stone got one vote.
The statewide amendment to require newly elected district attorneys and circuit clerks to contribute toward their retirement picked up 12 “yes” votes and three “no” votes, with two under votes.
On the Democratic ballot, the voter chose presidential candidate Bernie Sanders; Amanda Brooke Brandmire, Ashley Bryant, Cynthia Thelen Garrison and C. Whiteside-Curry as female delegates; Gil Bachmann, Cameron Kelly-Johnson, James M. Price and Peter E. Tubbs as male delegates and Ron Crumpton as U.S. Senator.
Tiffeny Owens can be reached at 256-734-2131, ext. 135.
Editor’s Note: These vote totals are complete and official from the Cullman County Probate Office, however the results must be certified by the state which is expected to occur this week. Provisional ballots were opened and counted Tuesday, March 9 to confirm the official final vote tally.
